A helpful friend
Many shamanic cultures believe in animal guides or animal helpers. Everyone has a totem animal which is given to you the moment you were born. It’s a special guide that’s always there for you when you need its abilities. To answer your questions, sit by your side and to give you helpful instructions. You could see them as a reflection of your deepest self. They can help you discover your hidden qualities and have the ability to enrich your life. They can be your guide between spirit and the physical world, give you protection and help you to learn your lessons in physical and spiritual life. So, it’s quite handy to meet and to get to know yours!

Extra helpers
Your totem animal is the animal that you are connected to from birth and will be at your side throughout your whole life. But, you can also experience animals who are with you for a specific period of time and stay with you as long as you need them during a specific path or lesson in your life. We call them power-animals, they simply come with their special forces and insights and will leave you when their help is no longer needed.

Let’s meet your totem animal
It may sound crazy to have such a powerful helper around you of which you weren’t previously aware but, it’s certainly not too late to meet each other. The only thing that you actually need to do is to ask your totem animal to contact you and that’s easy, because there are many ways to get in touch.

If you are beginning to learn about your totem animal it seems that dreaming is the easiest way to begin to meet your new friend. Totem animals could easily bring you messages while you are dreaming.  Just ask your totem animal to show up in your dreams before you go to sleep. Leave a little note-book on your bedside-table and write down whatever you noticed when you wake up and see what happens…..But they can also show themselves to you in stories, songs, pictures, conversations, movies or visit you. The moment you become more aware you’ll see the same animal showing up, as if it keeps looking for your attention. The only thing is that you notice the signs. It can bring  you a feather or something specific that belongs to it, it can call its name or let its voice come through your ears. Just open yourself, be aware of the animals around you and feel what’s happening….
Or, you can use these wonderful ‘Medicine Cards’ by clicking here  to learn about the meaning of animals signs in your daily life and how these signs are powerful and meaningful to your life situations. They can give you wonderful insights and can be a way to learn more about your totem animal.
If you are meditating you can try to reach a state of consciousness to visualize, feel or hear your totem animal. On the Internet you can find a lot of guided meditations you can use to go on a journey and meet your animal guide.

Friends forever
Once you have met your totem animal it is important get to know your new friend. See if you can meet somewhere and learn about its behavior. Take photos and hang them in a visible place in your house. If you like to draw or paint; create  images of your totem animal and if you find small figurines or jewelry with the image of your animal that’s also nice. The more you surround yourself with  your totem animal the easier and better the contact between you two will become and the easier you can ask for its help and feel its messages coming to you.
I wish you lots of fun on your journey of discovery together!
Stay tuned: more nice stories about the shamanism to come! Lots of love, Yvon

    1. Hi Sue,
Thank you for your response. Beside the tips I gave in the article I do also have a very nice meditation you can use to find your totem animal.
It’s in Dutch so I need to translate it first but if you think you’ld like to try I’ll give it a try! This meditation helped me to find the owl, my totem animal.
I wish you all the best and please feel free to let me know.
      Love, Yvon
